These are even splits. Almost nobody swims a race evenly — most distance swims are fastest on the first and last hundred — so treat the table as the target average, not as a lap-by-lap instruction.

Pace per 100 is the unit swimmers actually think in

Runners think in minutes per kilometre, cyclists in watts, swimmers in seconds per 100. Every set on every whiteboard is written that way, and every pace clock on every pool deck is built for it. Converting your race times into a pace per 100 is what lets you compare a 400 against a 1500 against a set of 10 × 100 without doing arithmetic in your head at the wall.

How to use the split table

The table gives even splits: the clock reading at each distance if you held exactly the same pace throughout. That is a target average, not a lap-by-lap instruction. Two things to keep in mind when you take it to the pool:

Turning a pace into training

A pace on its own does not tell you how hard to swim. That is what the CSS test is for: it converts two time trials into a threshold pace and five training zones, so a set written as “10 × 100 at threshold” has a number attached to it. What pace will not tell you

Two swimmers can hold the same pace with completely different stroke counts, and the one taking fewer strokes has room to go faster while the other is already at their ceiling. Pace measures the outcome; stroke count and distance per stroke measure how you got there. Track both, or you will spend a season working harder at the same speed. Frequently asked questions

What is a good swimming pace per 100 m?

For an adult who swims for fitness, holding 2:00 per 100 m for a continuous swim is a solid benchmark and around 1:45 is strong. Trained masters swimmers hold 1:20 to 1:35 over distance, and elite 1500 m swimmers average under 1:00. Pace also depends heavily on the pool: a 25 m pool gives you more push-offs and a faster clock for the same effort.

How do I convert my pace from yards to metres?

A yard is 0.9144 m, so 100 yards is 91.44 m. A pace of 1:40 per 100 yards is roughly 1:49 per 100 m on distance alone. If you are comparing race times rather than training paces, use the course converter instead, because turns matter as well as distance.

Should I swim even splits?

As a target, yes — even pacing is the most efficient way to cover a distance, and almost every distance world record is close to even. In practice most swimmers go out slightly fast and finish fast, with the middle slowest. If your first 100 of a 400 is more than three or four seconds quicker than your average, you are leaving time in the pool.

How fast is 1.5 m/s in swimming?

1.5 m/s is 1:06.7 per 100 m, or about 5.4 km/h. For scale, the men's 1500 m freestyle world record — 14:26.79, set by Johannes Liebmann in August 2026 — averages 1.73 m/s for the entire race, and a comfortable adult fitness pace is nearer 0.85 m/s.
